These cookies are a great way to strengthen a child’s alphabet skills while providing a tasty treat! Let your child help you make these cookies and mold them into letters as the cookie dough handles somewhat similar to modeling clay. You can even use the cookies to spell out a special message for a birthday!
Step by Step Instructions
Pre-heat the oven to 300 degrees F.
Put the flour into a large mixing bowl. Cut the butter into fairly small pieces then add them to the flour. Let you child mix the butter and flour mixture with his/her hands until a fine crumb forms.
Using a separate bowl, mash the hard boiled egg yolks in with the sugar. Stir the flour mixture with this mixture.
In another separate bowl, blend the vanilla with the raw egg yolks, then stir this mixture in with the flour using a fork.
Press the entire mixture into a firm ball (or let your child do this). Cover, then refrigerate the dough is you are going to shape and bake it later. If not, you can use the dough at room temperature.
Roll out the dough on a smooth surface. Cut the dough into 3 or 4 inch strips and let your child make them into ropes by rolling them.
Shape each rope into the letters (with the help of your pre-schooler of course!) Flatten each letter slightly to about 1/4 inch thick. Proceed to decorate them with the colored sugar, chocolate chips etc if you are using these ingredients.
Bake the letters for about 25-30 minutes on a large baking sheet.
Notes
To decorate a table for a family dinner, make a cookie in the shape of the first letter of each person’s name and place at each place setting. This will be an extra special treat after everyone has finished dinner!
